1. Who We Are

The Journal of Community and International Law (JCIL) is published by the Centre for Community & Oceanic Law (CFComLaw), a non-profit organisation incorporated under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with offices at No. 9 Agho Street, off Ekehuan Road, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. CFComLaw is the data controller for personal information processed in connection with this website and the journal's editorial operations.

2. Information We Collect

Manuscript authors: Name, email address, institutional affiliation, academic biography, and the contents of submitted manuscripts.

Peer reviewers: Name, email address, institutional affiliation, and areas of expertise.

Website visitors: Technical data including IP address, browser type, pages visited, and visit duration — collected automatically through standard web analytics tools (Google Analytics or equivalent).

Contact form users: Name, email address, and the contents of enquiry messages submitted through this website.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use personal data for the following purposes:

  • Processing manuscript submissions, including peer review coordination and editorial correspondence
  • Communicating with authors regarding the status of their submissions
  • Acknowledging receipt of manuscripts and providing review decisions
  • Publishing accepted articles, including the author's name and institutional affiliation as credited scholarly attribution
  • Maintaining our reviewer database and coordinating peer review assignments
  • Improving the functionality and content of this website
  • Responding to enquiries submitted via our contact form

4. Legal Basis for Processing

CFComLaw processes personal data on the following legal bases: (a) Performance of a contract — when processing data necessary to manage the submission and publication process that authors have voluntarily entered into; (b) Legitimate interests — when processing data for website analytics and communication purposes; and (c) Consent — where you have expressly agreed to a specific use of your data, such as joining our mailing list.

5. Data Sharing & Third Parties

We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data to third parties. We may share limited personal information with:

  • Peer reviewers (manuscript data — double-blind process, so author identity is not disclosed to reviewers)
  • Technology service providers who operate this website and email systems, under data processing agreements
  • Legal or regulatory authorities where required by applicable law

6. Published Articles

Upon publication of an accepted article, the author's name, institutional affiliation, and academic biography (as provided by the author) will be published alongside the article on this website and in the downloadable PDF. This constitutes scholarly attribution and is a standard condition of academic publication. By submitting a manuscript, authors consent to this use of their personal information.

7. Data Retention

Submitted manuscripts and associated correspondence will be retained for a minimum of five years following the editorial decision, to maintain the integrity of the peer review record. Published author information will be retained for as long as the corresponding article remains published. Contact form enquiries will be retained for a period of twelve months.

8. Your Rights

Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to: access the personal data we hold about you; correct inaccurate personal data; request deletion of your personal data (subject to our retention obligations); withdraw consent where processing is based on consent; and lodge a complaint with a relevant data protection authority. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at journal@cfcomlaw.com.

9. Cookies

This website uses cookies to improve your browsing experience. Essential cookies are necessary for the website to function properly. Analytics cookies help us understand how visitors interact with the website. You may configure your browser to reject cookies, though this may affect the functionality of some website features.

10. Changes to This Policy
